Are you paying too much for your utility bills? Call the Student Utility Company on 0800 183 2288 to see if you can save money by changing from your current supplier. You may typically be able to save 10% by switching, compared with staying with British Gas and your local electricity company. This can work out as £50 per year on a £500 combined bill. http://www.studentutility.com

Spend more time at the library, and reduce your heating
bills.
Buy a good jumper, and turn your thermostat down. This
can help dramatically reduce your heating bills. Just reducing
your temperature by 1 degree can reduce your fuel bills by 10%,
saving a typical student flat over £50 per year.

efficiency tips
Energy

Use energy efficient light bulbs, and make sure you
take them with you if you move flat. Although they are more
costly to buy than conventional bulbs, they use 80% less electricity.
Give up alcohol for lent, or for some other period,
and you will find that you have much more cash left over each
week. If this seems impossible, just try going without for one
week at a time.
Restrict heavy drinking sessions to once each month,
or once each week if you must.
Join a society, such as your university film club,
where you will be able to take part in many activities without
having to spend a fortune.
Watch out for the not-so-cheap drink offers, which
are designed to get you into a pub. Prices often rise later
on in the evening, and by that time you may be too drunk to
realise it.
Use your student union more often - drinks will always
be much cheaper there.
Cutting back on one five-pint drinking session per
week, will save you £10 per session (assuming an average
of £2 per pint), or £100 per ten-week term.
Give up smoking - that daily ten-pack of Marlboro lights
will set you back £70 per month, or over £800 per
year. That would buy a good holiday or a new computer. Stop
