Are you always asking for student discount? You will
not get one if you don't ask for it. If you study at one of
the "Scottish Ancient" universities (Edinburgh, Glasgow,
Aberdeen or St. Andrews), you may be told that discounts are
for NUS members only. Politely remind them that you are a university student just like anyone else, and that you should not be discriminated
against just because you study in Scotland.
A young persons' railcard will save you 1/3 off most
rail fares. Remember that you need to have one to get the savings,
and can't just turn up to the station and ask for a student
discount. At £18, it should pay for itself on one major
long distance trip.
Coach travel is even cheaper than using the train,
although some journeys will take all day. Make sure you have
a student coach card, which will save you 1/3 off most journeys.
Live in a box - box rooms are usually much cheaper
to rent than larger rooms. With a bunk bed, you can still have
some space to move in. Not an option for the claustrophobic,
clutter collectors or the terminally untidy.
Eat meals together with your flatmates, and save on
cooking time. This will enable you to cut down on wasteful left-overs.
You are more likely to devote time preparing a meal if you are
going to share it with others, and this will reduce your need
for expensive takeaways or convenience food, which is not very
nutritious anyway.
Make your own sandwiches and cut down on your snack
costs. Avoid expensive vending machines.
Buy yourself a filter, and drink plenty of water. This
will save you a fortune compared to canned drinks and mineral
water - five 60p cans of fizzy drink per week will set you back
£30 per term, or £90 per year.
