Set a budget, and stick to it. See our New Finance
budgeting pages for ideas on how to set and stick to a tight
spending budget, and still have some money left over to enjoy
life.
Avoid the plastic trap of over-using your credit cards.
Don't buy lottery tickets in the hope that your magic
numbers will come up and clear your overdraft. They won't.
Make sure that your important possessions are well
insured, to avoid a financial emergency, which would ensue if
your house was burgled. Some household contents insurance policies
include student accommodation, so make sure you aren't paying
twice. Get Home Insurance.
If you can, look for flats with ten month, rather than
twelve month lease arrangements.
Avoid being overcharged by your bank. Don't go over
your authorised overdraft limit, as this will cost you dearly.
If you think that you will always do this occasionally, make
sure that you are with a bank which does not penalise you heavily
for this.
Go straight home when term has finished.
