NSF Urge Students Call For Student Loans To Be Increased

Students in higher education have called for student loans to be increased to cover the full cost of university living.

The National Student Forum (NSF), which was launched by the government in February to give students a greater say in policy, has also called for grants to be made available to allow students from poorer backgrounds the opportunity to visit at least two university institutions before applying.

The student recommendations have been listed in the 18-strong group's first annual report, which was put together during a series of "student juries" at universities across the UK .

Commenting on the report, NSF chair Maeve Sherlock, said: "You need to get a true picture of what your college or university will be like to live and study in."

"Many students will go to open days, which is a really good idea, but we think there should be financial help for those from poorer families to travel to these places," he added.

According to research published by the National Union of Students (NUS) this week, some 46 per cent of students are forced to work during term-time because their basic living costs exceed their loan entitlement.
