Students Still Neglecting To Take Out Insurance

Students in Britain are failing to take out cover for the contents of their rooms, new research has revealed.

According to a report by M&S Money, the average student has over £1,500 worth of goods in their room, which consist of £718 of electrical gadgets and appliances, £498 worth of clothing, £224 of sports equipment and £210 of text books .

Just 16 per cent of students admitted to having insurance, despite the findings revealing that 14 per cent of undergrads have been victims of burglaries while at university .

Steve Price, head of general insurance at M&S money, said: "Insurance may be the last thing on students' minds as they prepare for the new academic year. It often feels like an unnecessary expense on top of everything else.

"Many students would be surprised to know that their valuables may already be covered - they just need to check whether their parents' home insurance policy covers their property when away from home," he added.

However, recent research from Sainsburys Bank suggested that a quarter of all home insurance policies in the UK do not cover the possessions of the household's students who are living away from home .
