Northern Cities Rated Best For University Students

Cities in the North of England and Scotland are the best locations for university students, according to new research.

An analysis of more than 38,000 reviews from 66 university towns revealed that Sheffield, Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen are the joint-best UK cities for university location.

The research, carried out by website accommodationforstudents.com, involved undergraduates from across the country rating their university area based on going out (restaurants, pubs and clubs), shops, transport links, community (safety, student population and surroundings) and facilities (gyms, libraries and parks).

The seven northern and Scottish cities in the top 10 all had an overall score of 62 per cent, with Exeter and Brighton being the only southern cities to receive an equal score and a place in the top 10.

Pontypridd in south-east Wales and Salford were the lowest scoring towns, each receiving a mark of 44 per cent.

The survey was carried out to mark a revamp of the student website, which has 1.8 million registered users.
