Avoiding financial difficulty while studying at university is possible, according to the Guardian's university guide .

The newspaper said applying for financial support before commencing an undergraduate course can help make sure there are no money issues while settling in during the first semester.

The guide also advised students to ensure they use their loan cheque to pay the rent first before getting carried away with the social side of university life.

Student finance experts said it was important for those entering higher education to know exactly how much cash they are entitled to and to draw up a "realistic budget" based on this amount.

Other tips listed in the guide included taking on a term-time job and keeping up with pre-university employment during study breaks.
