Landlords Asked To Help Student Awaiting Loan Support

Mon, 28 Sep 2009

Landlords in Sheffield have been asked to help student tenants who have been affected by the student loans fiasco by putting rent collection on hold.

Sheffield council leader Paul Scriven made the plea to private providers of student accommodation after it was revealed that as many as 60,000 students across the UK may not receive their full loan support until late October.

Last week, the Student Loans Company (SLC) admitted that it was struggling to process applications for university funding, which have risen by 16.7 per cent this year, in time for the start of the 2009/10 academic year.

It said that all students who applied for loans on time should receive enough money to cover university tuition fees and basic living expenses, but it could not guarantee they would have enough to meet initial rent payments.

Councillor Scriven said: "The failure of the Student Loans Company to process these applications on time really is a shambles."

The Conservatives, who described the delays as an "appalling administrative cock-up", claimed this week that the government knew about the potential problems with the student loans system at the start of the year.
