New research has revealed over one million students in the UK do not understand their personal tax status.
According to HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC), more than half of Britain's 2.3 million students are unaware that they have to pay tax on earnings made whilst studying.
Student advice group UNIAID said the figure is worrying, especially as three-quarters of university goers now work part-time to help cover their course fees and living costs.
The group also highlights TV licensing and council tax exemption forms as other areas of concern.
Jemma Samuels, programme director for UNIAID and the Brightside Trust, said: "As students move away from home they are confronted with a succession of financial responsibilities."
"Students have to learn to deal with the day to day realities of independent living. This includes understanding your personal tax status as a student ."
HMRC states that many students who earn under £6,475 a year could claim back the tax accrued.
