Universities Set Maximum Tuition Fees For 2012

Fri, 08 Apr 2011

City University London and Oxford Brookes have become the latest academic institutions to announce they will charge students the maximum £9,000 tuition fees next year.

The announcements come a day after Business Secretary Vince Cable warned universities they will face cuts to teaching funding and student places if they set fees around the maximum level.

More than 30 universities have already declared their intended fee levels for next year, with the majority planning to charge £9,000.

Those planning to charge the maximum include the country’s top two universities – Oxford and Cambridge – as well as other elite institutions like Imperial College London, University College London, Manchester and Warwick University .

MPs voted to raise tuition fees to £6,000 from 2012 at the end of last year, with institutions allowed to charge up to £9,000 only in "exceptional circumstances".

But so far, most universities have revealed they have no option but to charge fees around the £9,000 mark.

Experts have warned that students who pay maximum fees could end up graduating with debts of more than £60,000.
