Student finance should not be more of a worry for those studying abroad

Student finance should not be a bigger issue for those taking part in an Erasmus exchange project than it is for youngsters who continue their studies in the UK.

This is the opinion of ThirdYearAbroad.com, which advised that studying overseas need not be more expensive than completing a course in Britain.

It noted that students heading abroad can seek financial assistance from the European Commission.

Founder Lizzie Fane explained that there is no need for those taking a year of their course in a foreign country to rack up more debt than their stay-at-home counterparts.

"Erasmus students from the UK receive a non-means tested grant provided by the European Commission, which for 2011/12 will be €225 (£197) a month," she said.

The expert added that youngsters should also look to work part-time during their year abroad, which should help to boost their future job prospects and improve their language skills.

Recent data from Push.co.uk showed that students who start university this year are likely to owe £26,100 by the time they leave.
