University goers considering their student loan options may need to be vigilant when organising such matters online.
This is because a number of arrests have been made after suspected fraudsters were believed to have scammed hundreds of scholars in the UK.
Four men and two women were taken into custody by the Police Central eCrime Unit (PCeU) for allegedly taking part in fraudulent activity that the Metropolitan Police group claimed was worth more than £1 million.
Detective Inspector Mark Raymond said the PCeU had successfully disrupted the suspected cyber criminals in their efforts and prevented further losses to students as a consequence.
He stated: "A great deal of personal information was compromised and cleverly exploited for substantial profits."
As part of the scam, university goers were directed to a false website that asked them to enter details of their student loans, allowing the criminals to access their bank accounts and withdraw between £1,000 and £5,000.
The police were assisted in the investigation by banks, internet service providers and the Student Loan Company, which has around 1.3 million student customers at present.
