The government has backtracked over proposals to provide extra places at universities for students able to pay additional fees .
It was reported yesterday (May 10th), that universities minister David Willetts was considering proposals that would allow universities to offer places beyond the government quota of how many undergraduates they can take on each year.
Students on gaining these ‘off-quota’ places would not be eligible for state financial support, meaning they would have to pay vastly higher fees.
The proposals caused outrage among many, with accusations the government was allowing the rich to buy their way into university and so damaging social mobility.
However, prime minister David Cameron has moved quickly to deny the government was considering such a plan.
"University access is about ability to learn, not ability to pay. We have a very strict set of rules about university access and that is what we will be maintaining," the Daily Mail quotes the prime minister as saying.
