Part-time university students in Scotland should be given greater financial help with tuition fees, the Open University has said.
According to a survey by market research company MORI, 24 per cent of Scots said they would be interested in studying part-time were it not for the cost of tuition.
Scottish students studying full time in Scotland pay no tuition fees. However, around for in every ten of those who study at university part-time pay their own fees.
James Miller, director of the Open University in Scotland, said: "Access to higher education should be based on the ability to learn, but many part-time students at university continue to have to pay tuition fees.
"There's clearly an issue about fairness, but it is also a critical issue for the government to address early on, if our economy is to grow and remain competitive."
Meanwhile, it was recently reported that the Scottish government is considering raising university fees for students from elsewhere in the UK.
