The Scottish government is looking at raising the amount the country's universities can charge students from other countries in the UK.
While university is free for Scottish students, universities currently charge students they receive from England, Wales and Northern Ireland an annual fee of £1,800, or £2,800 for those studying medicine .
However, with laws in England being changed to allow universities to charge up to £9,000 a year in tuition fees, the Scottish government is looking to also up the amount it charges students coming from other UK countries, the Scotsman reports, but is yet to set an exact figure.
University leaders are anxious for the issue to be clarified ahead of this summer’s student open days.
"It is really a priority for us," a source within the higher education sector told the newspaper.
"There are university open days over the summer for students, who are hoping to apply in September 2012, and so it really is urgent."
Currently, around 20,000 students from elsewhere in the UK attend Scottish universities .
