Some students attending Staffordshire University next year could be charged close to the £9,000 upper limit for course fees .
The university is the latest to unveil its fee proposals following the government's reforms, revealing that it will charge students as much as £8,490 per year for some courses.
This will be reserved for courses offering "nationally leading awards", where "Staffordshire University is particularly renowned".
However, 80 per cent of students will be charged less than £8,000, said the university, with fees of £7,490 per year for classroom-based awards and £7,990 per year for lab, studio-based and resource-intensive awards.
Vice-chancellor Professor Michael Gunn commented: "We have undertaken considerable work on our pricing and have consulted widely. This reflects the fact that everything we do is built around the needs and ambitions of our students.
"We are confident we can offer them an excellent deal with high employability prospects and that the income generated will enable us to deliver top-quality education to as many people as possible."
Around two-thirds of universities are expected to charge the maximum £9,000 in fees for some or all of their courses.
