Cost of rent a big concern in student finance

Fri, 18 Nov 2011

The increasing cost of rent is among the biggest concerns facing university goers taking out keywordstudent loans, according to the findings of a money advice event held at Coventry University.

Undergraduates claimed they are having trouble making all the numbers add up while living off campus, the Coventry Telegraph reports.

Held as part of Student Finance Day, the question and answer session brought up a number of issues preoccupying scholars at present.

Charlotte Hodgson, a second-year maths student at the institution, noted she is having difficulty with the cost of rent in shared housing - an issue that could be sorted out with an increased student loan amount.

The 19-year-old stated: "I have to rely on my parents to help me out, even though the whole point of going to university is to be more independent."

Sally Mendoza, a fellow attendee of the university - which has roots stretching back to the founding of Coventry College of Design in 1843 - said she is left with just £20 a week for food after paying all other outgoings, meaning she has to budget accordingly.
