Student finance decisions might consider gas costs

Tue, 04 Oct 2011

University goers using their student loan in order to settle accommodation costs may be wise to place a high importance on utility prices such as those involving gas.

However, it appears undergraduates are not considering such matters to the extent they perhaps should be.

Sarah Harris, senior communications adviser at National Grid, which is one of the biggest investor-owned energy companies on the planet, has suggested scholars are putting a greater emphasis on more trivial subjects - like having a big bedroom and being located close to the pub - than they are regarding gas.

The industry figure said more than 50 per cent of today's students are unaware whether or not their landlord has a gas safety certificate "and over 80 per cent do not know who to call in the event of a gas leak, so there is a real problem there".

Ms Harris added issues with a boiler can result in carbon monoxide poisoning - which can lead to illness and even death.
