Changes in wider society over the last two decades have had a considerable impact on student finance, it has been suggested.
In a report seen exclusively by the BBC, the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP) noted universities are currently educating a different kind of scholar than they used to.
The RCP - which aims to set the standards in UK psychiatry and mental healthcare - observed there are now a lot more students from less privileged backgrounds who are not as prepared for campus living as their wealthier peers.
It means increasing numbers may be looking to secure a student loan - but the organisation also warned the pressure could be placing undergraduates at greater risk of depression and anxiety.
Dr John Callender, one of those involved in the study, said of university goers: "Many are having to work long hours in paid work on top of full-time academic studies. Many are less well-supported by their families than was the case in years gone by."
