Student finance could be hit by theft

Individuals heading to university could find their student finance is seriously affected should they fall victim to theft.

New research from NFU Mutual has found those moving away as they progress into higher education could be at risk of losing more than £1,000 worth of belongings if their accommodation is broken into.

The organisation has urged scholars to check whether their parents' house cover stretches to their student digs, as 81 per cent of home insurance products also take such residences into account.

Paul Richardson, a home insurance specialist at NFU Mutual - which has more than 300 local branches throughout the UK - said the effect of having to replace stolen goods can be "crippling", adding: "Especially if, in the case of laptops and bicycles, the missing property is essential for travel to lectures or writing up essays."

The industry figure explained this task becomes markedly more difficult if the victim does not have the right cover in place.
