Government striving to help student finance

Fri, 03 Feb 2012

The government is striving to improve student finance in the UK, it has been suggested.

David Willetts, who is minister of state for universities and science, explained more university applications have been made under the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition than in any year under the previous regime, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The politician explained the increase occurred despite warnings about current student finance reforms.

He noted the moves are aimed at placing those entering higher education at the heart of the system, adding: "That is why we have improved the information available, including on the employment outcomes of different courses at different universities. Prospective students are becoming more discriminating."

More information is required for those heading into higher education, while a new student champion role for the university funding council is needed, as well as more opportunities for undergraduates to make complaints when they encounter problems.

Mr Willetts' comments come after recent research from the Chartered Insurance Institute found many young people lack basic financial knowledge, such as what the terms 'APR', 'equity' and 'credit' mean.
