University goers in Cardiff have been warned about a student loan scam targeting those heading into higher education.

Cardiff Trading Standards has alerted undergraduates that an email is being sent to scholars claiming to be from the Student Loans Company.

This post requests people hand over personal information - such as bank account details - in order for them to receive their payments.

In addition, the email, which is headed Urgent Verify Payment Details, asks individuals to click through a link that appears to take users to the Directgov page - the website of the UK government.

However, by doing so, people will be directed to another portal hoping to get hold of passwords and usernames.

Councillor Judith Woodman, deputy leader of Cardiff Council, noted: "Anybody who has applied for a student loan, or has a relative who may have applied for a student loan, should be aware that this scam is going on."

Ms Woodman added university goers need to remain vigilant and to resist the urge to respond to any emails that are in any way suspicious.
