Postgraduates in agriculture could see their student finance worries eased thanks to new bursaries being offered by NFU Mutual.

The rural insurer has revealed it is once again presenting its Centenary Award for university goers of this kind - with those lucky enough to receive it being handed bursaries to pay up to 75 per cent of course fees beginning in autumn 2012.

Initially launched in 2010 by the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust, the initiative is now in its third year and has so far helped 12 people with their student finances .

Richard Percy, chairman at NFU Mutual - which has a history stretching back more than 100 years and now has over 300 branches throughout the UK and in excess of 990,000 customers - said his organisation recognises the vital role agriculture scholars will play in the future of the sector, adding: "Our Centenary Award aims to create a long-standing legacy for the future and highlight our continued commitment to the countryside."

Mr Percy explained he wants the bursaries to benefit agricultural education and research, while also encouraging a farming industry that is both vibrant and sustainable.
