Would-be university goers are choosing to give their student finances a boost by heading out on a gap year before entering higher education, new research has shown.
Carried out by American Express Platinum Charge Card, the study revealed savvy undergraduates are motivated by the desire to earn money and gain work experience rather than rush straight into a degree.
According to the investigation, one-third of young adults plan to go on a gap year, with 43 per cent of these doing so in order to obtain paid employment.
Such moves should serve to bolster a university goer's finances and perhaps even reduce the size of student loan they require.
John Paasonen, director of charge cards at American Express - which has operations in more than 130 countries - noted mothers and fathers can take measures to ensure their children are safe when heading overseas for long periods of time.
The industry figure stated: "Supplementary cards are a great tool for both travellers who encounter an emergency and parents who want to ensure their children have a safety net while away from home."
