HSBC offer students a flexible bank account that comes with a wide variety of benefits and optional ‘extras’ such as fee-free MasterCard (£500 credit limit) when applying for the Student Service.

What’s offered?

  • Optional interest free overdraft – up to £1,000 during the first year
  • Ability to bank 24/7 and manage finances online via Internet Banking
  • Student Insurance with the option of four different levels of cover from £2,000 to £5,000
  • Optional fee-free MasterCard (£500 credit limit) when applying for the Student Service. The card comes with up to eight week’s interest-free credit and is accepted at 20 million outlets across the globe
  • Commission free travellers cheques and foreign currency
  • A Maestro debit card
  • Specialist university branches with advisors who can offer advice and support with all student final matters, plus access to the HSBC Talking Money website


HSBC also offer a standard graduate service, although from 16 July 2008 it will no longer come with a free overdraft facility. However, the bank’s Graduate Plus service offers a tiered interest-free overdraft which drops from £1,500 in the first year to £500 in the third year. Graduate’s can expect to pay around £10 for the privilege.
